Before you watch

It's become a trope at ELT conferences around the world that at some point a presenter will hold up a phone and comment that, these days, our phones are more like small computers.

This is hardly news. But it doesn't make it any less significant.

Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, and the first realisation that we could carry the internet – in fact, our whole lives – in our pocket, many people have seen a gradual transformation in how they do many everyday activities: how they communicate, how they navigate, how they consume, how they create. This episode of ELT in the Digital Age looks at how far that transformation has come and what it might mean for ELT.

Before you watch, take a moment to ponder the ways in which your life has changed since 2007, specifically because of smartphones. What have been the most significant changes? Which were sudden and which happened gradually? And what effects, if any, has this had on your career in ELT? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
